Defrosting a public well / Public art event

1/5/2021 5 p.m.

2B Gallery

In a household without water, you have to go to a public well. The practice of fetching water means several hours of invisible work a day, in all seasons of the year.

Although harsh winters in Hungary get shorter year by year, public wells can still freeze for months. People dependent on public wells have to heat up the pumps regularly to be able to fetch water. Defrosting a well takes around 20-40 minutes if the fire is fed continuously. Should the freezing temperature persist for longer, the practice has to be repeated on a daily basis.

Our public art event aims to raise awareness on the challenges of accessing water, which are social and political in their nature. We demonstrate the possibilities of providing water regardless of the weather, and the challenges and special maintenance practices of households with lack of public services.

The workshop series explores the differences between households with or without public services by incorporating the individual experiences of the participants. Using methods of art and drama pedagogy, the workshop examines everyday practices as well as the stereotypical visual interpretations related to poverty that characterises mass media communication, and attempts to find alternative ways of approaching, portraying and dealing with the situation.

Thematic photo examination + mold and rust making workshop with Balázs Máté Tóth

During the workshop, we examine the most visible maintenance problems of living spaces, processes of mould formation or amortisation. Then, turning our observation into practice, we experiment with the visual reconstruction of mould and rust to help residents of households whose living conditions do not facilitate this on their own.

Guided tour and thematic discussions

13/5/2021 6. p.m.

20/5/2021 7 p.m.

Online program

Project Everyday Shortcomings maps the lack of public services and its consequences in affected households. How can we reframe the visual representation of poverty, and instead of portraying individual vulnerability, shed light on the difficult circumstances themselves? The exhibition focuses on the creative coping mechanisms that are a result of such conditions, as well as the challenges and limitations of the situation.

As part of the guided tour, roundtable discussions explore the various aspects of everyday practices. We examine the relationship between housing conditions and individual /institutional responsibilities, the continuous and ambivalent attitudes of affected residents towards transition, and the general visual communication about local environmental experiences. Experts to join the conversation will be Bass László, sociologist, researcher of poverty and professor of ELTE, Pósfai Zsuzsi, researcher of housing condition at the Periféria Policy and Research Center, Kata Ámon, XV. kerület alpolgármesteri referense,Phd researcher at the Center for Policy Studies (Central European University) focusing on housing issues, and Dobák Judit cultural anthropologist, regional and rural development economist.
